Q: What are performance fabrics?
A: Performance fabrics are fabrics that have been engineered to be more durable overall than traditional upholstery fabrics.
Q: What brands of performance fabrics do you offer at INTERIORS HOME?
A: Sunbrella, Kashmira, Revolution, Crypton and Nuvella.
Q: Are all performance fabrics equal in nature and durability?
A: Not exactly. While they all wear better than traditional upholstery fabrics, the various brands have strengths in different areas. For example, one brand may excel in fade resistance, while another might be rated higher in stain resistance. Our sales team will help you choose the performance fabric that best suits your needs.
Q: Are performance fabrics more expensive?
A: Like all fabrics, there are different grades available to choose from, so prices vary.
Performance FAQ fabric swatches
Q: Are designer fabrics available in performance quality?
A: Absolutely! Every performance fabric manufacturer has an extensive collection of on-trend and designer fabrics, and we have swatches of them all in our Design Center!
Q: Are performance fabrics easy to maintain?
A: Yes. These fabrics require little upkeep. Regular vacuuming is all that should be needed. See our Performance Fabric Care below for cleaning and care instructions.
Q: Are performance fabrics scratchy or plastic feeling?
A: Not at all. The patented processes used by the different manufacturers each produce soft, beautiful fabrics with amazing durability!
Q: How do the performance fabrics hold up to spills and stains?
A: Most performance fabrics will cause spills to bead up, so simply blot up! Some liquids left unattended may eventually soak in, so be sure to blot any spill right away.
Q: Do performance fabrics last longer than regular fabrics?
A: Yes. Performance fabrics resist pilling, fuzzing and fading.
Q: What types of warranties come with performance fabrics?
A: Most traditional upholstery fabrics come with a manufacturer’s one-year warranty. Performance fabrics come with a three- to five-year warranty.
Q: May I order performance fabrics on ANY upholstered frame from INTERIORS HOME?
A: Most manufacturers offer performance fabrics, and some manufacturers will apply performance fabrics if ordered separately.
Q: Do I still need to purchase GBS protection for furniture upholstered in a performance fabric?
A: At INTERIORS HOME, we strongly suggest purchasing our protection plan. This insures against issues such as rips and accidental punctures, and it protects you from any issues with frames, motors, and a host of other possibilities unrelated to the upholstery fabric.
Q: Is it true that performance fabrics are only intended for outdoor use?
A: No. While some manufacturers may focus on outdoor furniture, all performance fabrics also work well for interior use.
Q: How do I clean performance fabrics?
A: Cleaning methods vary from one manufacturer to another. At INTERIORS HOME, we recommend that you follow the manufacturer’s cleaning instructions that can be found on your furniture law tag, or listed below in our Performance Fabric Care section.
One of the best ways to keep performance fabrics looking good is to brush off dirt before it becomes embedded in the fabric, and wipe up spills, or clean, soon after a mess occurs.
The quicker you clean spills and messes, the easier they will be to remove.
Try this first…With a new spill or stain on your Sunbrella fabric. Blot (don’t rub) liquid spills with a clean, dry cloth. For oil-based spills, apply an absorbent substance such as corn starch, then remove with a straight edge. Spray on a mild cleaning solution of soap (such as Dawn® or Woolite®) and water. Rinse the fabric thoroughly to remove all soap residue.
Spot Cleaning
1. Apply a light mist of mild soap and water using a spray bottle.
2. Work the solution into the stain by lightly agitating the entire surface area of the fabric, moving from seam to seam, with a sponge or very soft bristle brush. Avoid scrubbing, and do not use a hard bristled brush or anything that will abrade the fabric.
3. Rinse the entire fabric thoroughly to remove all soap residue.
4. Blot excess moisture with a clean, soft towel or sponge.
5. Blot or wet-vacuum excess water from the entire surface area of the fabric, moving from seam to seam.
6. Air dry. Repeat rinsing and blotting until all soap residue is removed.
7. For severe stains, see the Sunbrella Stain Chart for removal instructions of specific stains. www.sunbrella.com/stainchart
Machine Washing
Some removable casings can be washed in the washing machine, however consult the furniture manufacturer before removing the casing as cushion construction may vary. To wash, first close all zippers. Machine wash in cold water on the delicate cycle with normal amounts of mild laundry detergent. Allow fabric to air dry.
Oil-Based Stains
Immediately apply an absorbent such as corn starch directly on the oil-based stain. Let sit for 10 minutes and remove the excess using a straight edge or ruler. This helps remove the stain and prevents it from being pressed into the fabric.
Then proceed with the cleaning process.
Seam-To-Seam Cleaning
When cleaning upholstered pieces, clean the entire surface area of the fabric, from seam to seam, instead of rubbing the fabric in a circular motion on the stain. This method, along with an extractor, may be required in order to avoid water rings and stains.
Spot Cleaning
The spot cleaning method of stain removal can be used for most light to medium stains on Crypton fabric.
1. Before spot cleaning, blot up liquids on the surface with a clean, soft towel and brush off any loose dirt.
2. Prepare a cleaning solution of 1/4 tsp mild, enzyme detergent, such as Tide®, Woolite® or Dawn® dishwashing liquid, per 1 cup of lukewarm water.
3. Apply the cleaning solution using a misting spray bottle.
4. Work the solution into the affected area by lightly scrubbing the area with a sponge or soft bristle brush. Make sure to work from the outside of the stain inward so as not to spread the stain and rinse your sponge or brush frequently.
5. Allow cleaning solution to soak into the fabric.
6. Rinse thoroughly to remove all soap residues, as residues will attract dirt. Blot excess moisture with a clean, soft towel or sponge.
7. Repeat steps 3-6 as needed.
8. Allow fabric to air dry.
Extraction Cleaning
The extraction cleaning method of stain removal can be used for most medium or ground-in stains on Crypton fabric.
1. Before wet-cleaning, blot up liquids on the surface with a clean, soft towel and vacuum the upholstery.
2. Prepare a cleaning solution of 1/4 cup mild soap, such as Woolite® or Dawn® dishwashing liquid, per gallon of lukewarm water.
6. Wet-vacuum or blot excess moisture with a clean, soft towel. Follow directions on filling the Ruby Extractor machine with the proper solution; wet the area with pre-spray, and vacuum up the solution. Be sure to extract the entire surface of the upholstered furniture to achieve uniform cleanliness.
7. Rinse thoroughly to remove all soap residues, as residues will attract dirt.
8. Repeat steps 3-7 as needed.
9. Allow fabric to air dry.
Spot Cleaning
The spot cleaning method of stain removal can be used for mostlight to medium stains on Revolution fabric.
1. Remove any loose debris and blot stain.
2. Blot or spray water and bleach solution on the stain and allow solution to soak into fabric.
3. Thoroughly rinse fabric with water until clean.
4. Let fabric air dry. Detailed Cleaning Instructions Any household cleaner will remove tough stains. Do not use harsh brush, machine wash, dry clean or iron. Exposure to high temperatures will damage fabric.
How to clean basics
Clean cushion stains or spills with a solution of 2 oz. mild soap to 1 gallon of lukewarm water. Use soft bristle brush, rinse well and let air dry. For stubborn stains: use 1 cup bleach to 1 gallon of water. Spray solution on non-coated side of fabric. Do not soak with solution as it will damage the protective UV coating. Rinse immediately.
