Description
This hand-knotted wool Indian carpet, containing a touch of silk, was crafted in the ancient city of Jaipur; traditionally, rugs from this area were an inspiration to William Morris and other noted Arts and Crafts leaders. A carpet woven during the 17th-century reign of Jahangir, when trade with the West brought European botanical paintings to India, inspired this design. The flower heads fall within a trellis formed by curved serrated leaves, and the color palette reflects the traditional colors from Jaipur’s Rajasthan region. Similar floral work can be seen on the walls, ceiling, and floor of the famed Taj Mahal.
